Discharge Police Officer Among POS Robber Set Ablaze By Angry Mob

Published

A fired police officer was one of the two alleged point-of-sale thieves who were set ablaze in the state on Wednesday, according to the Enugu State Police Command.

After claims that one of the alleged POS robbers who was recently set on fire by a crowd near Bissala Road, Independence Layout in the state, was a working policeman in the New Haven Police Division, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, rejected the claims.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, provided a statement to our correspondent on Friday, November 11, 2022, in which the CP referred to the news as being false.

The command said that the only information that could be gleaned from the documents was that one of them, Ogbobe Benjamin, had long since been discharged as a Police Constable from the Nigeria Police Force due to acts of indiscipline.

The State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department has been given the go-ahead to conduct a covert investigation to learn more about the incident’s circumstances and persons involved.

No matter the situation, using self-help to carry out acts of jungle justice in this way without turning to existing laws and the criminal justice system is completely unacceptable and is the same as committing a crime in and of itself, the Commissioner said.

He issued a strong warning against such vile and abhorrent activities that contravene the Constitution’s provisions and other existing laws, particularly when it comes to a person’s unalienable rights, and hinder the command’s efforts to fight crime and criminality in the state.

The CP added asked state residents to always uphold the law and support the Police in thwarting criminals and their schemes.
