Bride Price Is Nothing But A “Glorified” Marital Slavery In Nigeria – Uche Maduagwu Reveals

Published

Controversial Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu has said paying a woman’s bride price is a glorified and dehumanizing marital slavery in Nigeria.

According to Uche,  negotiating a fee or price on a woman in exchange for her to get married, is not love but slavery which needs to be broken. Explaining further, he stated that bride price has both psychological and social implications for the men who pay and for the women for whom it is paid, because, psychologically, the practice created an ownership mentality in men.

In a lengthy write up, he stated,

The definition of women’s identities, and their sense of self-worth in #marriage, was determined by men through the payment of #brideprice. 🍎🍎That is not only disgusting, but it also shows the value we place on women in #Nigeria. 💔A #culture that create room for women to be commercialized and used as a bargaining tool before getting #married is flawed, 💔some would argue that the concept of #bride price, on its own.

It’s not buying somebody, 💰but a symbol of #love, seriously? You negotiate a fee or price on a woman in exchange for her to getting married, and you call that love? 🤣No, that’s a #marital slavery love because that bride price has both psychological and social implications for the men who pay and for the women for whom it is paid, because, psychologically, the practice created an ownership mentality in men. 🤷‍♂️Why do you think #Nigerian. Married men exercise unfettered Authority on their wives?🤷‍♀️”.
