Chelsea Must Add A Striker The Likes Of Drogba or Costa – Jamie Redknapp

Published

Chelsea’s game against Manchester United was crying out for a striker.

Manchester United had only one chance all game and Cristiano Ronaldo took it with aplomb. However, Chelsea forwards Timo Werner and Kai Havertz weren’t clinical in front of goal.

Romelu Lukaku was signed to replace the goalscoring feat of Drogba, but it hasn’t worked so far for the Belgian.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has admitted that Chelsea need a striker like Didier Drogba and Diego Costa, pointing out that with any of the duo in the team, Chelsea would have beaten Manchester United.

Drogba and Costa were strikers who could score 20 plus goals a season, but Chelsea’s current forwards haven’t shown anything close.

While Kai Havertz has scored 7 league goals this season, Timo Werner has scored just 10 league goals since joining Chelsea in 2020. Meanwhile, Lukaku has hit the back of the net only five times this season.

Jamie Redknapp said on Sky Sports: “I think Thomas Tuchel will think how have they not won this game. The amount of opportunities they had on the right side

“They felt Romelu Lukaku was going to be the missing piece to the jigsaw, the man who would get them 20, 25 goals to elevate them to the title race and it hasn’t worked out.

“Werner’s not a natural finisher. Havertz, I love his movement. But they haven’t got that goal scorer like a Drogba or Costa who’s going to get you the 20 or 25 goals that you are going to need to win the title and that’s really where they have come up short.”
