The governor’s assistant got trapped in a stampede at the Giginya Stadium exit gate on Tuesday, January 31, when she attended the People Democratic Party (PDP) presidential event that was held in Sokoto state.

One of the Ministry of Information’s employees said:

“A motorcyclist fell down from his bike at the exit way of the stadium and that caused a serious stampede, with people falling upon one another. She was one of the victims.”

Maina was taken to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto for treatment following the stampede, according to Ibrahim Magaji Gusau, chairman of the Forum of Special Advisers, who confirmed Maina’s death.

She was hardworking and enthusiastic, according to Magaji, who also noted that they worked together the night before the demonstration to finish up some of the rally’s preparations.

He said:

“She died few minutes after her admission. Even during the rally, we were together, not knowing that would be our last meeting.”

Maina was the former chairperson of the National Woman Journalists Association of Nigeria (NAWOJ), Sokoto state chapter. She was also the former Special Adviser to Governor Aminu Tambuwal on New Media before being moved to Female Education Board.
