Kylian Mbappe to ‘pay back’ massive Real Madrid signing bonus received before U-turn

Published

Real Madrid reportedly forked out a £34million signing-on fee for Kylian Mbappe in December, only for the Frenchman to make a last-minute u-turn and pen a new deal at PSG

Kylian Mbappe sensationally received a £34m signing bonus by Real Madrid but he will now have to hand back the mega-sum after snubbing a move to the Spanish capital, according to reports.
The French wonderkid, 23, shocked the footballing world last week by announcing his decision to stay at PSG. Mbappe’s U-turn follows a long-running transfer saga with the La Liga champions, having seen a £171m bid knocked back in August.
A boyhood Real Madrid fan, it seemed only a matter of time before the Ligue 1 star bagged his dream switch to the Santiago Bernabeu – especially considering he was seemingly already on their payroll.
Spanish journalist Tomas Gonzalez-Martin reports Mbappe had already agreed terms on a multi-million contract this summer and Los Blancos had even paid out his signing-on fee.

He told Bernabeu Digital: “I was not surprised by what happened this week. If you asked me 15 days ago I would have said yes because he [Mbappe] had more or less agreed with Real Madrid.
“He had received an advance of 40 million of the signing-on premium in December. Everything was signed in a pre-agreement since last year when he was going to make the transfer.”
Real Madrid are said to be shocked and deeply frustrated by the Frenchman’s u-turn. The Champions League finalists had halted their pursuit of Erling Haaland due to their belief that the Mbappe deal was rubber-stamped.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas slated the deal as an “insult to football” with Mbappe set to double his current £2m-a-month salary. As well as his eye-watering earnings, the 23-year-old will pocket a staggering £100m signing-on bonus on top of maintaining his image rights.

Gonzalez-Martin claimed that Mbappe’s decision to extend his stay in Paris was solely down to the financial benefits. He added: “Mbappe has been given almost 300 million renewal bonus and about 90 million net salary per year. In the end, he gave in for the money, which shows that he is not looking for sporting success and that he has betrayed Real Madrid.”
