Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of South Africa’s revered first democratically elected president, the late Nelson Mandela, has tragically passed away at the age of 43 after a courageous battle with metastatic cancer.

Last Monday, she was admitted to the hospital for treatment, but despite the efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to the relentless disease on the eve of her grandmother’s birthday. Zoleka was surrounded by her loved ones and friends during her final moments.

A family spokesperson, expressing the deep sorrow of the Mandela family, shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram, confirming her passing on Monday evening.

Zoleka Mandela had garnered recognition in recent years for her remarkable bravery in sharing her personal journey through cancer treatment. She also openly discussed her struggles with drug addiction, depression, and childhood sexual abuse, becoming an inspiration to many. Her extraordinary life story was chronicled in her autobiography titled “When Hope Whispers.”

Over a decade ago, Zoleka faced a breast cancer diagnosis, underwent treatment, and achieved remission. However, the relentless cancer returned, affecting her liver and lungs last year before spreading to other organs. Despite the challenges, she remained remarkably optimistic, even while dealing with complications such as blood clots and fibrosis in her lungs. Just days before her passing, she expressed gratitude for the ongoing treatment options available to her.
