UK Prime Minister Revealed Plans For The Funds From Chelsea FC Sale

Published

The Government of the United Kingdom have sanctioned Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich as the Invasion of Ukraine by Russia continues.

However, with Abramovich sanctioned by the UK government, he won’t have access to the funds generated from the sale.

Roman Abramovich had revealed before the sanctions that some proceeds from the sale will go to the victims of the war in Ukraine.

With Abramovich facing sanctions in the UK, his assets have been frozen indefinitely.

The British government are reportedly looking to avoid the proceeds of around £3billion sitting in a frozen bank account, with Blues owner Roman Abramovich having been sanctioned due to his ties with Russia president Vladimir Putin.

The Times claims that the UK prime minister Boris Johnson wants the money to go to a foundation to help Ukraine recover following the Russian invasion, yet there are concerns about the formalities of setting up such an initiative so quickly.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has written to Nadine Dorries, the secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport (DCMS), asking for £750m of the sale to go towards grassroots football, with a focus on improving 20,000 playing surfaces, building more than 1,000 artificial pitches and renovating changing rooms.
