Wijnaldum Set To Leave For Barcelona This Summer On A Free Transfer’

Published

Georginio Wijnaldum has reportedly decided to leave Liverpool at the end of the season to join Barcelona.

The Sunday Times claim that the the Dutchman has already agreed a pre-contract deal to become the first signing of Joan Laporta’s second spell as president.

The player’s current contract expires in the summer so it would be a free transfer.

Midfield reinforcements are a priority for Ronald Koeman with the club having hand their hands tied in last summer’s window due to financial issues.

The move is also seen as a vote of confidence in Koeman, whose side are finding form after a difficult first half of the season.

‘I would be happy if he would stay here,’ Klopp said earlier this season. ‘I am pretty happy with Gini. You can see that when you see most of the line-ups. He always played good, that’s why he played so many games. And he has played plenty of positions; different positions.’

Wijnaldum spoke recently of his love of playing for Liverpool, which suggests his move away from Anfield was essentially financial. Asked if it would be difficult to leave the midfielder said: ‘Really difficult. If that happens, you would be leaving a team that you really love. A team that you shared a lot of years together, a team where you feel really comfortable. That would be difficult but, on the other side, you would know the situation why you have to leave.

‘It always depends on the situation but I would be devastated [if] I didn’t play with this team any more, that’s for sure,’ he said.
