Despite a big 3-0 away victory at the weekend to stop the rot, Bild report that Monchengladbach chiefs have made the unusual decision of pre-empting a managerial change in the summer, with Alonso set to arrive.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder’s stock is very high and he has been coaching Real Sociedad’s B team in the third tier of Spanish football.

There was a general feeling that he would eventually take the reins of the first-team at Anoeta, following in the footsteps of Imanol in rising from the B team to the top job.

But with Imanol impressing in the hot-seat currently, Alonso has opted to speed up his journey to a top European club by heading to the Bundesliga.

The 39-year-old ended his career in German football with Bayern Munich in 2017, before coaching in Real Madrid’s youth academy to begin his coaching career.
