Anthony Michael Hall was born on April 14, 1968, in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. His parents were Larry Hall, who owned an auto-body shop, and Mercedes Hall, a blues-jazz singer. When he was just six months old, his parents separated.

At the age of three, he and his mother moved to the West Coast, where she found work as a singer. After a year and a half, they returned to the East Coast and settled in New York City, where he grew up.

Hall’s family background includes English, Irish, and Italian ancestry. He has a step-sister named Mary Chestaro, from his mother’s subsequent marriage to Thomas Chestaro, a show business manager. His step-sister is pursuing a singing career under the name Mary C.
