Breaking: Japan Stun Germany In Another Upset In Qatar Fifa World Cup

Published

As Germany’s World Cup Group E opener, goals from substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano in the final 15 minutes gave Japan a shock 2-1 upset victory.

Wednesday’s match at the Khalifa International Stadium had been controlled by the Germans, who took the lead on an Ilkay Guendogan penalty in the 33rd minute following a foul on Germany’s David Raum by goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda.

But the second goal never materialized, as Japan continued to make regular forays into the German half, which led to Doan’s equalizer and an outstanding strike from Asano eight minutes later.

The defeat was the third in a row in the opening match of a major championship for Germany after a loss to Mexico at the 2018 World Cup, when they bowed out in the first round as champions, and to France at Euro 2020.
