Narrow Escape For Passengers As Aircraft Overshoots Runway at Lagos Airport

In a heart-stopping incident on the night of September 8th, 2023, a United Nigeria Airlines aircraft experienced a mishap while landing at Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos.

The aircraft had just returned from Owerri, Imo State, and was scheduled for a routine landing.

However, amidst heavy rainfall, the aircraft skidded off runway 18R by 200 meters. Thankfully, what could have been a catastrophic event turned into a remarkable demonstration of safety measures and quick thinking.

The aircraft involved in the incident was an Embraer ERJ145 with registration number 5N-BWY. It was carrying 51 passengers and had four crew members on board.

The incident occurred at approximately 06:33 p.m. local time. While the aircraft’s approach and landing were initially normal, it unexpectedly skidded off the runway upon landing. Fortunately, all passengers and their luggage were safely evacuated, and there were no reports of injuries among the passengers or crew members.
