Born in 1960, Valarie Pettiford is an accomplished American actress, dancer, and jazz singer celebrated for her work on stage and television.

Her roots trace back to Queens, New York, in the United States, where she was raised by her parents, Ralph and Blanch Pettiford. In 1978, she took the stage at the High School of Performing Arts.

Valerie Pettiford’s Remarkable Career:

At just 17 in 1978, Pettiford marked her movie debut in “The Wiz.” Over the years, she honed her talents as a dancer and choreographer, making her mark in Bob Fosse’s Broadway shows.

She received glowing reviews from Alvin Klein of The New York Times for her performances in musical revues like “Ladies and Gentlemen, Jerome Kern!” in 1983 and “West Side Story” in 1987.

In the 1990s, Pettiford ventured into daytime soap operas with roles in “Another World” and “One Life to Live.” Notably, she portrayed a lesbian character in “The Naked Truth” in 1994 and starred as “Julie” in a touring production of “Show Boat” from 1995 to 1996.

Her portrayal in the Broadway show “Fosse” between 1998 and 1999 earned her nominations for a Tony Award and a Dora Mavor Moore Award.

Following her success in “Fosse,” she took on the role of “Velma Kelly” in “Chicago” in London’s West End from August 1999 to February 2000, alongside Chita Rivera as “Roxie Hart.” In 2001, she played Mariah Carey’s mother in “Glitter.”

Her role as “Dee Dee Thorne” on “Half & Half” from 2002 to 2006 garnered three NAACP Image Award nominations and served as a platform for showcasing her singing talent.
